I'm sewing my own clothes!
Well, here at FW life has been plodding on. I've been absent from blogging for far too long and hope to catch you all up with events.
Our FW patio garden is bursting with tubs of herbs all of which survived our mild winter well. I also have large tubs containing a gooseberry bush, a golden raspberry now beginning to fruit, strawberries just turning red, cherry tomatoes, courgettes, peppers and chillies. I need to find some bean plants as I was too late this year to grow some on.

If you've read my 'about me' page you'll know I'm a keen knitter and make a lot of jumpers, scarfs, hats, gloves and shawls etc. I have also been wanting to learn to sew which has been spurred on by the past two series of the Great British Sewing Bee. I originally took dressmaking at school but didn't pursue it as an option after age 14 as I was more interested in horses, then makeup, shoes and boys.
So here I am some 40+ years after my school sewing lessons inspired to create my own summer wardrobe. The first thing I knew I needed was a sewing machine, they are costly items so I advertised on Freecycle to see if anybody had one that needed rehoming. They did! A lovely lady offered me her 1960's electric machine and that little issue was therefore easily resolved. The machine, dubbed Audrey, is in perfect working order and I have purchased some magazines with free beginners patterns and researched techniques on YouTube widely.
I started off with simple pajama pants and have now worked my way up to having made simple skirts and tops and a tunic dress. Today, *drum roll please* I'm planning on making a proper blouse complete with a pocket and buttons, with button holes (gulp).
The skirt is pull on with an elasticated waist and side seam pockets. I opted for an elasticated waist pattern as I've yet to master zippers, I learned at school but have forgotten how so will need to examine YouTube for tutorials.
The blouse has two buttons at the back neckline which fasten with loops. I'm not convinced they go together or that the blouse even suits my shape but I made it and I'm going to wear it!
I found the skirt fabric online for £2.99 per metre, it's rather sheer so I found an old dress and took the lining out and cobbled together a lining for my skirt and feel rather pleased with myself as I made it up as I went along.
And moving on, I made a shirt! I even hand sewed the button holes and it's wearable, if a bit wobbly in places. I now know I don't like or suit mandarin collars so will change that when I sew this again in a pink gingham I bought from and end of bolt yesterday.

As my skills improve I will invest in more robust fabric as I know the investment will pay off in durability.
