4: Sides, balsamic roast potatoes serves two for £0.28p

This is based on Jamie Oliver's roast pork with balsamic roast potatoes, only cheaper

  • We enjoyed this dish again recently with some reduced price beef and I was staggered at the range in price of the various supermarkets' tinned potatoes.  As at November 2015 Asda remain the cheapest at £0.15p whereas both Sainsburys and Morrisons charge £0.20p. This varies between £0.025p-£0.037p* per 100g, which may not seem a lot but it's quite be lot on the unit price.

I used a YS shoulder of pork and a tin of potatoes with far less balsamic vinegar than JO's recipe calls for which we found to be overly vinegary.

Using tinned potatoes works a treat as they really suck up the flavour and crisp outside beautifully, although they won't be like roast flours potatoes as they a new potatoes.

Serves 2

Ingredients:

1 tin of value potatoes 550g = £0.15p (Asda Smartprice)
Half a tbsp sunflower oil 15ml = £0.03p
1tbsp cheapest balsamic vinegar 45ml = £0.10p

Method:

Preheat your oven to 220C or equivalent.

On a baking sheet or shallow roasting tin heat the sunflower oil until very hot.

Place the potatoes in and coat with the oil then add the balsamic vinegar and turn them over to cover with the oily mixture.

Return to the oven and cook at the set temperature for 5 minutes then turn in the flavoured oil again and cook for a further 5 minutes.

Turn the oven down to 170C and cook for a further 20 minutes turning half way through.
